How to Become a Leader Worth Following

Learning how to become a leader is essential to your success. Whether you own a business, teach school, manage a small group, coach an athletic team, or are working to advance a worthwhile cause, you need to enroll others in order to achieve the success you want.

This not only requires you to hold a vision of what success is, it also requires you to practice coaching and training skills that will inspire others to want to help you reach that goal.

Because our success often requires the help of others, successful people, not surprisingly, are also successful leaders.

How to Become a Leader

Leaders know how to communicate their vision in exciting and compelling terms. They’ve mastered the skill of motivating others to jump on board with full commitment. They recognize the potential in their people, coach their team members to go above and beyond, and routinely acknowledge others’ positive contribution.

And while great leaders must demand accountability from the people they lead, they also hold themselves accountable for their contribution to the result.

So let’s take a look at some of the basics of how to become a leader or coach whom people will want to work with and follow.

1) Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses

One of the most distinguishing qualities of a great leader is their dedication to understanding themselves.

When you have a clear sense of who you are, your strengths and weaknesses, and know the impact your behavior has on others, your ability to lead others will improve. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses gives you the ability to discern when your skills will add value or not and keeps you open to delegating and listening to people with other points of view.

2) Hold Yourself Accountable

Essential to your success in leading others is a commitment to taking 100% responsibility for your own actions and results. When you consistently follow through on your own commitments, you begin to build others’ trust in your leadership. To be trusted, you must be reliable, punctual—and a person who keeps your agreements.

Do you arrive at meetings on time?

Do you deliver your part of projects completed and on deadline?

Do you abide by promises made to your team members and others?

These are the hallmarks of a leader who is responsible and consistent—versus one who is perpetually late, unprepared, emotional or continually led astray by the latest fad.

Of course, no one is perfect—including leaders. But while perfection might be desirable, consistency will be far more impactful because it builds integrity and reliability with your team. It makes you a trustworthy leader.

3) Inspire Your Team With a Clear Vision

To inspire others to work tirelessly to help accomplish your goal, you must first have a clear and compelling vision of the future.

What will you and your team ultimately achieve? By when?

What will everyone gain when the goal is reached?

Is it honorable, beneficial, ethical, and uplifting?

What’s so compelling about it?

What else will also be achieved as your team is striving for this major goal?

To get other people’s buy-in, you’ll also need to articulate who your team will become as they learn and grow on the path to achieving your vision. Your team must be able to see themselves in the future as better, smarter, stronger, more valued, and more confident.

Defining that outcome plus other benefits people will experience—is an important part of your clear and compelling vision.

4) Listen for Possibility

Once people are enrolled in the vision, a great leader will listen to his team not only to hear their thoughts and input but also to make sure they feel heard.

People want to know they make a difference and that their insights and opinions matter. When you develop your listening skills, you’ll be more present in the moment, you’ll be curious to hear other options, you’ll be able to truly hear what emerges from a discussion, and you’ll be open to a true dialogue with your team instead of simply delivering orders or explaining the game plan.

This requires a willingness to be transformed by what you hear. But more important, it requires you to shift your focus from listening for “the right way or the wrong way” to listening for what is possible. I call this “listening for possibility.”

5) Coach Others to Take on a Leadership Role

Growing a team of your own top-notch leaders simply makes your life easier. And the most useful skill for growing other leaders is coaching.

Through deep listening and skillful questioning, you can help others discover their own solutions to problems and opportunities. Instead of being the only person figuring out what to do next, when you use coaching to help others develop their own solutions, you are also helping them develop their own problem-solving skills.

To any leader who has been bombarded with the simplest and most mundane problems to solve, this idea of empowering your people with their own leadership skills will be a relief. So how can you coach your people to become leaders in their own right? Start by asking your people to correctly define the problem.

This gets them fully engaged in the process and helps them “take ownership” of the problem as one that they need to solve.

Studies show that once a problem or challenge is theirs, it will be solved more efficiently and stay solved longer if you allow your team to create the solution. You provide direction only when they have reached the limits of their experience or training. Give people the tools and information they need to solve problems—then let them stretch.

How to Facilitate Change By Empowering Others Through Coaching & Training

Each of us has the power within us to create the life we want, the life we dream about, and the life we were born to live. And you, even as a sole individual, can have a tremendous impact on others through personal coaching and training.

Each of us deserves to reach our full potential and manifest our true destiny. It is our birthright, but it must be claimed. It must be earned through hard work and training. Part of that work is first learning, and then living by the time-tested and ageless success principles that are guaranteed to bring about our desired results.

Most of us did not learn the principles of success in school. Only a few of us learned them at home. Instead, the principles of success have been passed down by mentors, teachers, coaches and more recently in books, seminars, and audio programs.

YOU Have so Much Wisdom to Offer Others

As a student of success, you have much wisdom to offer the people in your life. The greatest gift you can give anyone is a gift of empowerment and love. What could be more loving than training someone you care about get free from their limiting beliefs and ignorance about success, and empowering them to create the life that they truly want from the depths of their soul?

What if everyone in your family gave up complaining, took full responsibility for themselves and their lives, and started creating the life of their dreams?

What if everyone in your company practiced these principles?

What if every man and woman in prison learned these valuable principles before they were released back into society?

It would be a very different world.

Imagine a World Where Everyone is Clear on Their Vision and Goals

Imagine a world where everyone would take 100% responsibility for their lives and the results they produce or don’t produce. Where everybody would be clear about their visions and their goals. Where nobody would fall victim to the criticism and abuse of others.  Where everyone would persevere in the face of hardship and challenge.

Men and women would band together in teams to support each other to become all that they could be. People would ask for what they need and want and feel free to say no the requests of others when it is not right for them to respond with a yes.

People would stop whining and complaining and get on with creating the life that they want. People would tell the truth and listen to each other with compassion because they know that peace, joy, and prosperity would flourish if they did.

People would tell the truth and listen to each other with compassion because they know that peace, joy, and prosperity would flourish if they did.

In short, the world would work!

The Greatest Contribution You Can Make

The greatest contribution you can make to the world is to grow in self-confidence, self-awareness, self-realization, and the power to manifest your own heartfelt dreams and desires.

This is why Mahatma Gandhi advised:

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi

As you shift, the people around you will notice and be inspired to model your actions. And as they shift, you’ll find that your little world becomes more of the place you dream it to be, full of support, peace, and love.

Help Others Grow Through Personal Coaching and Training

The next greatest thing you can do is to actively facilitate the growth of others by taking on the role of a trainer or coach. But, they are not the only ones who will benefit by your investment of time and energy in taking on the role of a coach.

Passing along your wisdom forces you to clarify your ideas, confront inconsistencies in your own thinking, and more closely walk your talk. But most importantly, it requires you to read, study, and speak the information over and over again. The resulting repetition reinforces your own learning.

And here’s another major benefit of coaching—the more you coach other people to succeed in life, the more they will want to help you succeed. If you’ve ever wondered why people who teach success strategies are so successful, here’s the answer:

Because they have helped so many people get what they want, those they have helped naturally want to return the favor.

The same will be true for you.

I envision a world where everyone is inspired to believe in themselves, and their abilities, and is empowered to reach their full potential and realize all their dreams.

I want the Success Principles taught in every school and university, and practiced in every small business and large corporation.

I’d love to have you join me in empowering others and changing the world.

I want to leave you with a bit of homework to complete after you’re done reading this.

Make a list of 4 people in your life who you can help coach or mentor and empower to grow. What can you do for someone else to facilitate change in someone else’s life?

It’s All Because of You…

jack-giving-thanks

Here in America, it’s Thanksgiving – and this year, I have more to be thankful for than ever before.

And it’s all because of you.

For the past 40 years, I’ve been on an ambitious mission: to make a huge positive impact on the world…

I truly believe we all have the right and the ability to live the life we want, and to be happy doing so.

But to make such a drastic shift on humanity, I need help.  I cannot do it alone!

That’s why I created a “big hairy audacious goal” that will help me: to have one million individuals become certified “Success Principles” trainers – and partner with me to help people all over the world to dream big, take action, and create happier, more abundant, and purpose-filled lives for themselves.

This is the legacy I want to leave on the world.  It’s the number one thing that drives me.  I know I was put on this planet to help people, and I work every single day to find ways to do that.

This is why I started my Train The Trainer program six years ago, and it’s the reason I launched the new online version of the program this summer – to ensure that anyone, no matter where they live, can become certified to teach the Success Principles to others.

I’m extremely delighted to announce that in just a few short months, we now have more than 800 people enrolled in Train the Trainer Onlinefrom 63 countries!

It fills me with a profound sense of pride to know that these people have stepped-up to join me in helping others become their best selves and create lives of deep joy and meaning.

Because if there’s one thing the world needs right now, it’s more people shining their light – and empowering others to do the same.

So today I would like to thank my team, who has worked so hard to help me make my audacious dream become a reality.

BUT I ALSO WANT TO THANK YOU!

The support and encouragement I’ve received this year from our Canfield Success Community has been truly overwhelming – and inspiring!

If you’ve invested in any of my products and embodied their teachings in your life, you have helped make this success possible.

If you’ve attended any of my live events or participated in any of my free online training programs, you have helped make this success possible.

If you’ve opened and read any of the emails I’ve sent over the past year, or are one of my 835,000 Facebook followers, you have helped make this success possible.

Because when I sit down to write, it’s the idea of YOU reading my words and being inspired by them to improve your life – and the lives of those around you – that motivates me to keep on doing the work I do.

SO THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart, for continuing to inspire me to empower people through my work.

You’re the reason I’m excited to get up in the morning – and if I’ve inspired you even a fraction of how much you’ve inspired ME, I will consider my life well lived.

Oh, and if you’re new to my community, or if this is the first time you’ve ever heard about Train the Trainer Online, feel free to check out the program here.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, no matter where you live in the world.

With gratitude, Jack.
