An Inside Look at my Private Retreats – New Video!

My team recently put together a video which gives an “inside look” into the world of my private retreats!

Often times, words cannot describe the full experience of  attending one my retreats . It’s so much more than what you learned, who you met, and what you got out of it. It’s how you FELT while you were there… how you were never the same again.

So, with my annual luxury retreat coming up in Italy this summer, I wanted to share a highlight video from our last luxury retreat in California. It’s the closest I can get to sharing the feeling with you of what it’s like to be with me at one of my private retreats.

In this video, you’ll see parts of the curriculum of the retreat, including:

  • Mastermind Sessions
  • Guided Meditation
  • One-on-One Strategy Sessions with me personally
  • ….And some fun activity time which we always include

The greatest joy in my life is to work directly with people one-on-one or in small groups and witness their transformations firsthand. We have been doing these private retreats since 2010 and each one is more powerful than the last.

I would be honored to work with you at this year’s upcoming retreat in Tuscany, Italy!

5 Reasons Why Self-Motivated Learners Win at Life

Self motivated student looking toward future with binoculars

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
– Mahatma Ghandi

5 Reasons Why Self-Motivated Learners Win at Life

In Japan, the word for constant and never-ending improvement is kaizen. Not only is kaizen an operating philosophy for modern Japanese businesses, it’s also the age-old philosophy of the warrior class—and it has become the personal mantra of millions of successful people all over the world.

All the world-class achievers I’ve ever met – whether in business, sports, or the arts – are committed to continual improvement and self motivation. They understand that in order to succeed in an ever-changing world, they must always be learning and evolving.

They don’t wait until external influences – such as a teacher, manager or boss, or new developments within an industry – force them to gain new skills or knowledge. They are self-motivated learners who are constantly looking for new ways to improve their performance and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Are you a self-motivated learner?

Here are 5 ways to tell if you’re a self-motivated learner who has what it takes to achieve incredible success in life…

1. You learn because you WANT to, not because you think you “have” to

Are you a naturally curious person? A motivated person tends to ask more questions and devote more time to discovering the answers. If you are the kind of person who actively pursues your personal interests, you’ll find it easier to naturally acquire the skills and knowledge you need to design a life that’s more in alignment with your goals and dreams.

2. You’re willing to admit you don’t know everything

Do you have a greater sense of self-awareness? Self-motivated learners tend to have a deeper understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses. If you view gaps in your knowledge as growth opportunities, you’ll be able to upgrade your skill set to achieve even higher levels of success.

3. You’re willing to take bigger risks – and get bigger results

Are you driven by a strong sense of personal achievement? Self-motivated learners thrive on accomplishment and have more confidence in their abilities because they are able to achieve so much on their own initiative. If you’re not afraid to leave your comfort zone and take big risks, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish.

4. You’re more likely to finish what you start

Do you refuse to give up in the face of setbacks? When self-motivated learners experience challenges, their drive to succeed increases! If you have a strong sense of personal accountability, you will naturally be better at managing your time and avoiding distraction – and will see your projects through to completion faster.

5. You’re always two steps ahead of the pack

Are you a naturally pro-active person? Self-achievers refuse to wait for changing circumstances to force them to adapt. If you are continually learning, you will be able to anticipate new developments long before they happen and thrive in an ever-changing world no matter what life throws your way.

How many times did you answer “Yes”?

If you answered “Yes!” to four or more of the questions above, congratulations! You are a self-motivated learner.

If you didn’t answer yes to most of the questions, the good news is that these habits can be developed over time.

All you need to do is make the commitment to become a self-motivated learner. Set aside a specific amount of time each week to expand your knowledge and upgrade your skill set – and stick to it!

The more you learn, the more you will naturally want to KEEP learning because of the huge positive impact it will have on your life and career.

If you ARE a self-motivated learner – or want to become one – here’s an exciting opportunity just for you.

I am in the process of launching a brand-new Train the Trainer Online Certification Program that has been specifically designed for self-motivated learners like you.

This self-directed online course allows you to learn the exact same content I teach during my popular Train the Trainer Live certification program – but you’ll be able to complete the entire course (and become certified) from the comfort of your own home for a fraction of the price.

And best of all, you can master these skills at your own pace, on your own schedule – so you’ll be able to put my proven Success Principles training methodology to work in your own life and career right away!

When Goals are Forgotten: 4 Steps to Regain Self Motivation and Get Back on Track

Most people start pursuing their goals with great passion. But over time, they lose momentum, burn out and put their dreams aside.

If this happens to you, it’s a clear-cut sign that your goals are not sustainable. In the next few minutes you’ll discover how to get back on track toward your goals – and accelerate your momentum.

1. Evaluate Your Motivation

If you’ve lost momentum toward your goals, the first thing to do is verify your commitment. A lot of our goals tend to be “should’s” rather than deep “want to’s.” But I’ve discovered that without a burning desire to achieve a goal, your motivation wanes quickly, and your subconscious mind turns its attention to more exciting desires.

For example, many people set New Year’s resolutions to lose weight – a goal that often falls into the “should” category. We feel like should lose weight because it will make us healthier, reduce stress on our joints, and make us feel more confident and attractive. Unfortunately, these benefits are typically not compelling enough to motivate us to keep our commitment to lose the extra pounds.

However, if you find out that a new baby will soon join your family, your “why” suddenly becomes bigger. Now you’re motivated to lose weight because doing so will increase the odds that you’ll be around to watch that baby grow into adulthood.

Pull out your list of goals, and for each one, ask, “What is my why? Why do I want to achieve this? And am I committed enough to my why to do whatever it takes to achieve this goal?” By identifying or even upgrading your “why,” you can tap into greater motivation and commitment to achieve your goal.

2. Create an Action Plan

Once you’ve confirmed that your goals are things you truly want to achieve, the next thing to do is to create an action plan.

One by one, break each of your goals down. Get clear on what would really be required to achieve each goal. Realistically assess how many hours it would take each week or day to achieve the goal.

Next, start scheduling all of the activities that are required to achieve your various goals. (Note: If you don’t know all of the steps to achieve them, just list the ones that you are aware of for the purposes of this exercise; the rest of the steps will unfold once you begin taking action.)

Once you start scheduling key activities into your calendars, many of us begin to realize that there’s not enough time in our schedules to accomplish everything we want to do. If this is the case for you, go back and prioritize your goals. Which goals matter the most to you? Do any of your goals need to achieved before you can start working on another goal?

3. Declare Your Intentions

When you’re clear about which goals you’ll work on, you can increase your commitment by publicly declaring your intentions. Share your goals with the people in your life – the more, the better. You’ll be more likely to take action toward achieving your goals when the alternative is losing face with people about whom you care.

If the threat of public humiliation isn’t enough, you also can incorporate a negative consequence. Find something that will be painful for you to do, and publicly commit to enduring the consequence if you don’t achieve your goal.

Some people are more motivated by rewards than punishments. If this describes you, figure out how to find a reward that you’ll receive upon completion of your goal. This could be anything from a vacation to buying the car you want or something more simple, such as treating yourself to a new outfit, Louis Vuitton bag or a massage. Rewards are powerful for motivating your inner child.

Evaluating your progress AND level of motivation frequently will help maintain your momentum. By declaring your intentions, you can drill down on the specific area that needs more inspiration.

Imagine your goal is to write a bestseller but you struggle to stay focused.

What should you do?

In this case, you can look to experienced authors to provide tips to keep your writing motivation levels revved up.

4. Creating Accountability

Most of us find it easy to let ourselves off the hook. We can quickly justify why we haven’t followed through on our commitment to take action on any particular day, just as we can easily make excuses about why we miss our targets completely.

If you find yourself frequently slipping into these habits, an accountability partner will be a huge benefit to you. In fact, I believe so strongly in accountability partners that  participants at my annual Breakthrough to Success training  pair up with another attendee as their accountability partner before they leave.

Accountability partnerships work as follows: Each morning, you hold a 5-minute phone call during which you each share what you’re committing to do that day. For example, you could share your “Rule of 5,” in which you commit to doing 5 things to move you toward your biggest goal. (Tip: Use my Top 5 Priority Action Post-It notes to keep your commitment front and center.)

The next morning, you report on your progress from the previous day and share what you’ll accomplish in the coming 24-hour period. Knowing that your partner will be asking you whether you upheld your commitments the day before can be a powerful motivator for getting tasks completed.

A proven twist on accountability partnerships is working toward your goal with another person. For example, I meditate with my wife every morning. We hold each other accountable. If I sleep in too late, I can count on Inga to wake me up and say, “Come on, we’re meditating now.”

If you find that having a friend or colleague serve as your accountability partner is not enough, consider hiring a professional, such as a coach or trainer. These individuals may be better equipped to recognize self-sabotaging behaviors and beliefs – as well as to hold you accountable for taking action. And if you’re someone who hates to waste money, knowing that you’re paying someone to hold you accountable might be the added motivation you need to keep your commitments.

Get Back on Track – Starting TODAY!

It’s normal to veer off course when pursuing goals. Sometimes this happens because we’re not truly committed to our goals. Other times, it’s because we struggle to hold ourselves accountable for doing the necessary work. Use the tips in this article to get yourself back on track in making steady progress in turning your dreams into a reality.

VIDEO #3: How to speak to the 5 dimensions of a person’s being

Welcome to the third video in my series about the power of Transformational Training!

Here’s the first two in case you missed them:

  1. What Does It Mean to be a Transformational Trainer (19 minutes)
  2. What Makes Transformational Training So Powerful? (12 minutes)

In today’s 17-minute video, you’ll learn more about teaching to the 5 dimensions of a person. This makes it possible for your students or audience to experience the power of your teaching in all aspects of their minds, bodies, and spirits, so the message hits home more deeply and it’s easier for them to incorporate it into their mindsets and lives.

These are incredibly valuable skills that can be used in any teaching situation – in front of a class, on-stage, coaching personal clients, training staff, consulting for large organizations – even parenting your teenagers and young children!

If you’d like to learn more about how to get your message across on a deeper and more fundamental level, check out the video:

NOTE: These are the exact training methods I teach students in my world-renowned Train the Trainer program.

VIDEO #2: The difference between Transformational Trainers and Talking Heads

In my last blog post, I shared a short video taken from an hour-long interview I did last year on the topic of Transformational Training – and what it means to teaching people experientially from the inside out.

Here’s the next video in the series… It’s called “What Makes Transformational Training So Powerful” and will help you understand why this kind of experiential teaching methodology is so much more powerful than other teaching, training, or speaking styles.

(Hint: it’s because it involves having a system that actually moves people from point A to point B.)

The video is only 12 minutes long but well worth your time. If you’re a speaker, teacher, trainer, coach or consultant who’s interested in knowing how to create profound and lasting change in people, I encourage you to check it out!

NOTE: This is the same methodology I teach to my students in my Train the Trainer Certification Program. If you’d like to learn how to become a Transformational Trainer – and take your own speaking, teaching, or training career to the next level – I’m accepting a new group of students who want to become Certified to teach my Success Principles and join the ranks of the next generation of Human Potential Trainers.

VIDEO #1: How to inspire people on a profoundly deep level by teaching powerful “a-ha!” moments

This one’s for all of you speakers, trainers, teachers, coaches, and consultants out there…

Last year I sat down with my friend Steve Harrison for a special Live Stream event on the topic of Transformational Training, which is the cornerstone of my own personal teaching philosophy. It’s a powerful experiential methodology that I have developed over the course of my 40-year teaching, speaking, and training career, and it’s what I teach to students in my Train the Trainer program.

The reason this methodology is so effective is because it makes it possible for your students or audience to EXPERIENCE the full impact of your teaching – mind, body and soul.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be releasing a series of short videos from this event that will teach you more about Transformational Training – and what makes it so much more powerful than other teaching or speaking styles.

Here’s the first one – a  19-minute video called, “What Does It Mean to Be a Transformational Trainer?

If you’d like to become a world-class speaker or trainer – and create profound lasting positive change in your students or audience – I encourage you to check it out!

By watching this video, you will learn…

  • The kinds of profound shifts Transformational Trainers are able to create in their students or audience
  • The difference between external motivation and internal inspiration (and the time when I thought Deepak Chopra was going to diss me on national TV!)
  • How to teach “a-ha!” experiences that will inspire people to take ACTION and change their lives for the better
  • The difference between simply telling people what to do and helping them EXPERIENCE the truth of your teaching in their minds, bodies, and spirits
  • How one of my students – a kindergarten teacher – totally transformed her life and launched the first TEDX event in India – and who is now the top Transformational Trainer coach in her country!
  • How another one of my successful Train the Trainer graduates is using my Canfield training methodology to transform the lives of young people across all of Mexico
  • … and more!

How Success Has Changed in the Digital Age

Back when I wrote The Success Principles back in 2004, blogs were only just becoming “a thing.” MSN was the biggest brand on the Internet, Yahoo was more popular than Google, and Facebook didn’t exist yet.

Clearly a lot has changed since then!

The Digital Revolution has irrevocably transformed the world we live in. There is such an overwhelming amount of out there – not to mention endless distraction in the form of cute animal videos, meaningless celebrity gossip, time-sucking game apps, and pointless personality quizzes (I don’t care which Harry Potter character I am!) – and if you’re not careful, you can drown in it.

To succeed in today’s connected world, you need to take a more diligent approach to your time management, information management, and life management. You must be able to distinguish between information that’s interesting but ultimately irrelevant – and information that you can act on to create more positive results in your life and business.

That’s why I thought it was essential to add a brand-new section to The Success Principles – with new success principles that teach you how to make today’s technology work for you, so you can find the information and resources that will propel you to a higher level of success and help you create a dedicated community of supporters who will share your message with the world.

Here’s what you’ll discover in this new section:

  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 63: Master the Technology You Need

Learn how to eliminate digital distraction from your life – and limit your technology use only to those tools and resources that propel you closer to achieving your ideal life. You’ll get tips on how to maximize your online productivity while protecting yourself against potential security threats.

  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 64: Brand Yourself with an Online Persona

Successful people know they have to carefully manage their online persona in order to present a positive image to the world. Discover what your online presence says about you – and how you can master the art of appearing competent, authoritative, and respected in all your online interactions.

  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 65: Use Social Media in a Way That Enhances Your Reputation

Learn how to use social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram to advance your expertise, enhance your own personal brand, and attract followers who will stay engaged – and pass your message onto their friends, colleagues, and family.
  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 66: Use the Exponential Power of Crowdfunding

The Internet is that it makes it easy for creators to find people who will support their vision and give them the funds they need to get their project off the ground. Learn expert strategies on how to generate excitement for your idea and grow a huge customer base for your product – before you create it.
  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 67: Connect with People Who Can Expand Your Vision

Success is a team sport – and the more people you have on your team, providing you with the expertise, resources, and support you need to achieve your most ambitious goals, the faster you’ll be able to create your ideal life. Discover how to use the Internet to build your network of supporters and create a success team that will help you achieve your goals faster.

TSP-196x280Why The Success Principles Are More Important than Ever

Thanks to the Internet, it’s easier than ever before to find the information, resources, and support you need to achieve your loftiest goals and create your ideal life. And it’s easier than ever to start your own business and sell to customers all over the globe – or become an entrepreneur and share your passion with the world.

But with the overwhelming amount of information available to us – and the endless number of digital distractions – we have bigger challenges facing us as well.

That’s why The Success Principles matter now more than ever. By following these time-tested principles, you will be able to clearly define your path to success and overcome all the obstacles – digital as well as those in the offline world, including your own head! – that are holding you back from creating the life of your dreams.

Facilitate Change by Empowering Others

teamcroppedThe first Success Principle I teach is to take 100 percent responsibility for your life. Never has this been more needed than now. Current societal challenges have left many American living in a state of resignation and despair.

It is time to turn this situation around. Each of us has the power within us to create the life we want, the life we dream about, the life we were born to live. Each of us deserves to fulfill our full potential and manifest our true destiny. It is our birthright, but it must be claimed. It must be earned through hard work, and part of that work is first learning and then living by the time-tested and ageless principles that are guaranteed to bring about our desired results.

And you, even as a sole individual, can have a tremendous impact.

Pass Along the Lessons

Most of us did not learn the principles of success in school or at church. Only a few of us learned them at home. Instead, the principles of success have been passed down by mentors, teachers, coaches and more recently in books, seminars and audio programs.

As a student of success, you have much wisdom to offer the people in your life. The greatest gift you can give anyone is a gift of empowerment and love. What could be more loving than helping someone you care about get free from their limiting beliefs and ignorance about success, and empowering them to create the life that they truly want from the depths of their soul?

Imagine the Possibilities

What if everyone in your family gave up complaining, took full responsibility for themselves and their lives and started creating the life of their dreams? What if every one in your company practiced these principles? What if every member of your softball team approached life this way? What if every high school student in America knew these principles and put them into practice in class, on the playing field and in their social life? What if every man and woman in prison was to learn these valuable principles before they were released back into society?  It would be a very different world.

Imagine a world where everyone would take 100% responsibility for their lives and the results they produce or don’t produce. Where everybody would be clear about their visions and their goals. Where nobody would fall victim to the criticism and abuse of others.  Where everyone would persevere in the face of hardship and challenge.

Men and women would band together in teams to support each other to become all that they could be. People would ask for what they need and want and feel free to say no the requests of others when it is not right for them to respond with a yes.  People would stop whining and complaining and get on with creating the life that they want.  People would tell the truth and listen to each other with compassion because they know that peace, joy and prosperity would flourish if they did.

In short, the world would work!

Your Contribution Matters

The greatest contribution you can make to the world is to grow in self-awareness, self-realization and the power to manifest your own heartfelt dreams and desires. This is why Mahatma Gandhi advised, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

As you shift, the people around you will notice and be inspired to model your actions. And as they shift, you’ll find that your little world becomes more of the place you dream it to be, full of support, peace and love.

The next greatest thing you can do is to actively facilitate the growth of others. But they are not the only ones who will benefit by your investment of time and energy in taking on the role of teacher.

Passing along your wisdom forces you to clarify your ideas, confront inconsistencies in your own thinking and more closely walk your talk. But most importantly, it requires you to read, study and speak the information over and over again. The resulting repetition reinforces your own learning.

And here’s another major benefit—the more you help other people succeed in life, the more they will want to help you succeed. If you’ve ever wondered why people who teach success strategies are so successful, here’s the answer: Because they have helped so many people get what they want, those they have helped naturally want to return the favor. The same will be true for you.

Help Create a Movement

I envision a world where everyone is inspired to believe in themselves and their abilities and is empowered to reach their full potential and realize all their dreams. I want the Success Principles taught in every school and university, and practiced in every small business and large corporation.

I’d love to have you join me in spreading the word and changing the world. If you feel inspired to share the Success Principles with your clients, students, employees and family, I’ve created a study guide that you can use to lead a free Success Principles study group. Click here to download The Success Principles Instructor Manual.

If you’re ready to help us bring the principles to the world in a more structured way, consider joining my Train the Trainer program. Ideal for teachers, speakers, trainers, coaches, consultants, managers, business owners and other leaders, Train the Trainer gives you the chance to work personally with me for a full year. Attention Trainers: Could You Be Living AND Teaching The Success Principles?

Jack Canfield liveOne of the most powerful ways to learn anything is to teach it to others.

It forces you to clarify your ideas, confront inconsistencies in your own thinking, and more closely walk your talk. But most importantly, it requires you to read, study and speak the information over and over again. The resulting repetition reinforces your own learning.

When I launched my Train-the-Trainer program five years ago, my goal was to develop the next generation of human-potential trainers. Today, my goal is to eventually foster over one million people worldwide in teaching The Success Principles to others.

Could you be one of the 100 “insiders” I’ll work with next year to help achieve this goal?

Think about whom you might teach these principles to. Could you teach seminars locally? Can you offer a class at the local high school or community college? Could you lead a workgroup at the office to incorporate these principles on the job or in your department?

Or could you boost your existing career as a professional trainer?

If you can envision yourself as a dynamic and powerful presenter, training others in my proven success principles, click here to apply for my 2015 Train-the-Trainer Certification Program!

You don’t have to be a master of implementing these principles to lead a group, since I’ll help you become a master trainer as part of this immersive professional program.

Imagine the workgroups, clubs, sales teams, women’s groups, entrepreneurs, or companies where people could be working together to support each other in actively living these principles. The results would be miraculous. And YOU can be the person that makes that happen.

Everyone is a Teacher

It’s rarely a surprise to learn that successful people are lifelong learners. The amount of information that’s available in our world is growing at a mind-numbing pace. People who have more information gain a tremendous advantage over people who don’t.  What many people don’t realize is that successful people are also usually teachers, as well.

Forms of Teaching

There’s a saying that I share in my annual seminar, Breakthrough to Success: “Be a student to those above you, a fellow traveler to those at the same level, and a teacher to those below you.” In other words, everyone is a teacher.

Here are 4 common ways you can play the role of teacher.

BEing.   By simply BE-ing who you are, you can teach others by example. Whether it’s demonstrating grace under pressure, fearlessly pursuing your goals, or simply existing in a place of love and joy, being yourself can be one of the most powerful ways of teaching.

Sharing.   Even a simple conversation or passing comment can contain a nugget of wisdom that will profoundly change the life of someone else. People sometimes limit what they’ll share with others for fear of overstepping their bounds, being too personal, being ridiculed or other reasons. If you have an impulse to share something with another person, follow your instinct.

Mentoring.   Success Principle #44 is “Find a Wing to Climb Under.” In other words, find a mentor with whom you can study. If you want to achieve a goal, it helps to learn from someone who has already navigated the journey you want to take. Recognize that as a successful person, you can mentor others as they pursue the goals you’ve already achieved.

Study groups.   The greatest gift you can give someone is a gift of empowerment and love. What could be more empowering than helping others get free of their limiting beliefs and giving them tools to create the life they truly want?

One way to facilitate this change in the world is to lead a Success Principles study group. You’d be amazed at how radically you can change a family, a team, or a business simply by having everyone use the same success principles at the same time. You don’t have to be a master of the principles; you merely need to be willing to facilitate the discussion. Click here to download free study guide to teaching the basic principles.

Formal teaching.   If you want to impact the world in a bigger way, if you have a body of knowledge to share and/or if you are truly passionate about a subject, you may feel called to offer seminars or workshops. Teaching is my core genius and one of my greatest joys, which is why I’ve been leading seminars since very early in my career.

When I recognized that I was ready to impact the world in a bigger way, I started a Train-the-Trainer program so I could personally teach and mentor a small number of people each year how to teach others the Success Principles. Students and graduates of this program include everyone from professional speakers and trainers to managers, business owners, and parents who want to share these valuable principles in more structured ways within their companies and homes.

A Key to Mastery

High achievers often teach from a place of service. They know that the information they have may be exactly what someone else needs to achieve a goal. Because they have an abundance mindset, they recognize that by freely sharing what they know, their generosity will be returned tenfold by the universe.

But teaching can also benefit you directly by helping you develop a deeper understanding and mastery of a topic. To share what you’ve learned, you must clarify your ideas, confront inconsistencies in your own thinking, and more closely walk your talk. Most importantly, teaching requires you to read, study and speak the information repeatedly, which reinforces your own learning.

“If you want to learn something, read about it. If you want to understand something, write about it. If you want to master something, teach it.” ~ Yogi Bhajan

The World Needs You

You are a unique individual, and the lessons you have learned over the course of your life make you a unique teacher. High achievers learn from every experience, not merely from formal learning opportunities, such as attending seminars or reading books.

The lessons you can synthesize from your many experiences are invaluable. By being willing to share what you have learned, whether through informal chats or more formal encounters, such as seminars, you’ll contribute greatly to the success of the people you touch and the world as a whole.

Write a Book and Get It Published. (Yes, You!) Seven Key Strategies for Getting Started

Young people and education, woman studying for university testI’m about to tell you do something and you’ll think I’m crazy. Ready? Here goes: You should write a book.

I know, I know. You don’t need one more “to do” on your list. You have the pets, the kids, your job, possibly a significant other and their job, your house, this, that and the other. You don’t have the time or energy to put towards writing a book. Why would you put another “to do” on your list?

Publishing a book is more than a way to share your message and wisdom with others. It’s also a tremendous marketing tool. After all, no matter your industry or profession, everyone wants to do business with the person who “wrote the book.” Becoming a published author positions you as an expert and instantly affords you the type of credibility which can skyrocket your career to a whole new level.

Yes, you need a blueprint on how to create a success. But don’t think for a minute that you can’t learn how to do it. You can – and publishing a book will change your life. It changed mine.

In 1967, I was working as a social studies teacher at Calumet High School in Chicago. It was a rough school in a rough part of town at a rough time in history. Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated during the spring of that school year, on April 4, 1968, and we had a full scale riot in the school the next day.

The next year, I moved to Clinton, Iowa to take a job with the Clinton Job Corps Center, where I taught basic reading, math and job skills to women who had dropped out of school. I say “women” but many of them were just kids. They were 16-23 years-old and mostly women of color. Life was tough for them. But neither racial conflict, crime, nor poverty was the biggest problems of the women in Clinton or the kids in Chicago. What was? Low self-esteem! If you don’t believe in yourself, you’ll never find the motivation to change your life for the better.

Wanting to help these people, I worked with W. Clement Stone, who had a foundation at which I learned how to teach people self-esteem and self-motivation. He was one of my teachers and I’ll tell you more about the importance of teachers in a minute.

From Stone, I got motivated to go to graduate school and, later, I got a contract for an educational book about motivating students in the classroom. Great that I got a book deal, right? Well, I still had to write the book.

Picture this. It’s now 1975 and I’m working and going to school to support my wife and new-born baby. Now I have to write a book titled 100 Ways to Enhance Self-Concept in the Classroom – and I only have 20 ways. So I came up with a strategy, a blueprint really, for creating the book. I sat in my kitchen at a “desk” made of two filing cabinets with a hollow core door on top on which I put my IBM Selectric typewriter. And then I wrote one way to build self-confidence and self-esteem for the classroom every 3 ½ days. That equaled two ways a week and 100 by the end of the year.

Know what? The plan worked. The book sold 400,000 copies and became a bestseller. My life changed quickly and for the better. I became a consultant to school districts, spoke at educational conferences and made more money to support my family. I felt fulfilled creatively and motivated professionally because I was on the right path.

The path that started in that little kitchen led to me co-authoring the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. The books have sold over 123 million copies in North America with more than 500 million copies in print worldwide. But even that took a strategy for success. Many, many people said that Chicken Soup would never work as a book. It was initially rejected by 144 publishers. When I finally did get a publisher, he said we’d be lucky to sell 20,000 books. I told him my goal was to sell a million-and-a-half in the first 18 months. He laughed and said I was crazy. Well, today he laughs on his private jet!

Here’s what I know: If you have a plan and the right teachers, you too can become a successful author.

Here’s how to get started and make your book a success:

1 – Declare yourself an author NOW. Come up with a working title for your book and start telling people you’re the author of the “upcoming book titled XYZ.” One big reason to do this is it will create positive momentum for you. Once you start telling people you’ve got a book coming out, it makes it much easier to get it done. Plus, you can start enjoying some of the ancillary benefits of being an author, such as getting publicity on radio/TV, print publications and online. As with many things in life the key is to just get started – even if you don’t feel quite ready.

2 – Be selfish with your time. Writing a book is important – to you, your family and your future – and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Share your goal with your spouse, your parents and your friends. Ask them to help you create the time to write, even if it’s just 15 minutes every day. Create the habit. Good or bad, habits always deliver results. If you only write one page a day, in a year, you will have written 365 pages—more than enough for a book!

3 – Find your message. There is a book inside of you. It might be a business book, a memoir, a cookbook or something funny, a how-to or how-not to, a what-for or why-not. What are you good at? What is your passion? What can you teach other people to do?

4 – Identify your niche. Who needs to learn what you have to teach? Who would be most interested in your story? Get specific. For example, the Chicken Soup series includes Chicken Soup for the Christian Woman’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Military Wife’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Working Woman’s Soul and others. Knowing your niche will help you write the book and market it.

5 – Consider co-authors. Think a whole book is too much work? Get a co-author. I had co-authors on my Chicken Soup books. That person can share in the writing and, later, in marketing the book.

6 – Think marketing from day one. One of the biggest mistakes most new authors make is to spend all their time and energy writing the book, without sufficient thought to how they’ll market it. Ideally, you want to consider marketing issues while writing your book. For instance, consider short snappy chapter titles which easily lend themselves to being blog posts and/or radio/TV show segments.

7 – Meditate on problems. This might sound counter-intuitive. When you meditate, you try to relax, right? Well, not really. Meditating is harnessing your brain power and if you focus that energy on the problems you encounter – and every creative venture encounters problems – you’ll solve them. Meditate, go for a long walk or take a hot bath. Give your mind a problem to solve and give it the room to do so, and it will. That’s how I came up with the title Chicken Soup for the Soul.

Yes, there are other things you need to know. But the most important things are to get started, work hard and have the right mindset. I’ll share one of my favorite quotes with you. When oil tycoon J. Paul Getty was asked how he became one of the richest men in the world, he said, “One, get up early. Two, work hard. Three, find oil.”
