VIDEO #3: How to speak to the 5 dimensions of a person’s being

Welcome to the third video in my series about the power of Transformational Training!

Here’s the first two in case you missed them:

  1. What Does It Mean to be a Transformational Trainer (19 minutes)
  2. What Makes Transformational Training So Powerful? (12 minutes)

In today’s 17-minute video, you’ll learn more about teaching to the 5 dimensions of a person. This makes it possible for your students or audience to experience the power of your teaching in all aspects of their minds, bodies, and spirits, so the message hits home more deeply and it’s easier for them to incorporate it into their mindsets and lives.

These are incredibly valuable skills that can be used in any teaching situation – in front of a class, on-stage, coaching personal clients, training staff, consulting for large organizations – even parenting your teenagers and young children!

If you’d like to learn more about how to get your message across on a deeper and more fundamental level, check out the video:

NOTE: These are the exact training methods I teach students in my world-renowned Train the Trainer program.

VIDEO #2: The difference between Transformational Trainers and Talking Heads

In my last blog post, I shared a short video taken from an hour-long interview I did last year on the topic of Transformational Training – and what it means to teaching people experientially from the inside out.

Here’s the next video in the series... It’s called “What Makes Transformational Training So Powerful” and will help you understand why this kind of experiential teaching methodology is so much more powerful than other teaching, training, or speaking styles.

(Hint: it’s because it involves having a system that actually moves people from point A to point B.)

The video is only 12 minutes long but well worth your time. If you’re a speaker, teacher, trainer, coach or consultant who’s interested in knowing how to create profound and lasting change in people, I encourage you to check it out!

NOTE: This is the same methodology I teach to my students in my Train the Trainer Certification Program. If you’d like to learn how to become a Transformational Trainer – and take your own speaking, teaching, or training career to the next level – I'm accepting a new group of students who want to become Certified to teach my Success Principles and join the ranks of the next generation of Human Potential Trainers.

Announcing the NEW Success Principles: 10th anniversary edition (Plus, some free gifts for you!)

Jack-with-TSP10Ten years ago, I wrote a book that I hoped would change millions of lives around the globe.

That book was The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be. As you probably know, the book became a New York Times bestseller and is now hailed as a “self-improvement classic.” It’s available in 108 countries and 30 languages – and yes, I’m honored to say that it has indeed changed millions of lives.

To celebrate the book’s 10-year milestone – and ensure that it continues to change the world for the better – I’m delighted to announce that we’re releasing an updated 10th anniversary edition that includes a ton of new stories and new success principles to help you achieve even more success in today’s online world.

How Success Has Changed in the Digital Age

Back when I wrote The Success Principles back in 2004, blogs were only just becoming “a thing.” MSN was the biggest brand on the Internet, Yahoo was more popular than Google, and Facebook didn’t exist yet.

Clearly a lot has changed since then!

The Digital Revolution has irrevocably transformed the world we live in. There is such an overwhelming amount of out there – not to mention endless distraction in the form of cute animal videos, meaningless celebrity gossip, time-sucking game apps, and pointless personality quizzes (I don’t care which Harry Potter character I am!) – and if you’re not careful, you can drown in it.

To succeed in today’s connected world, you need to take a more diligent approach to your time management, information management, and life management. You must be able to distinguish between information that’s interesting but ultimately irrelevant – and information that you can act on to create more positive results in your life and business.

That’s why I thought it was essential to add a brand-new section to The Success Principles – with new success principles that teach you how to make today’s technology work for you, so you can find the information and resources that will propel you to a higher level of success and help you create a dedicated community of supporters who will share your message with the world.

Here’s what you’ll discover in this new section:

  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 63: Master the Technology You Need

Learn how to eliminate digital distraction from your life – and limit your technology use only to those tools and resources that propel you closer to achieving your ideal life. You’ll get tips on how to maximize your online productivity while protecting yourself against potential security threats.

  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 64: Brand Yourself with an Online Persona

Successful people know they have to carefully manage their online persona in order to present a positive image to the world. Discover what your online presence says about you – and how you can master the art of appearing competent, authoritative, and respected in all your online interactions.

  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 65: Use Social Media in a Way That Enhances Your Reputation

Learn how to use social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram to advance your expertise, enhance your own personal brand, and attract followers who will stay engaged – and pass your message onto their friends, colleagues, and family.
  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 66: Use the Exponential Power of Crowdfunding

The Internet is that it makes it easy for creators to find people who will support their vision and give them the funds they need to get their project off the ground. Learn expert strategies on how to generate excitement for your idea and grow a huge customer base for your product – before you create it.
  • SUCCESS PRINCIPLE 67: Connect with People Who Can Expand Your Vision

Success is a team sport – and the more people you have on your team, providing you with the expertise, resources, and support you need to achieve your most ambitious goals, the faster you’ll be able to create your ideal life. Discover how to use the Internet to build your network of supporters and create a success team that will help you achieve your goals faster.

TSP-196x280Why The Success Principles Are More Important than Ever

Thanks to the Internet, it’s easier than ever before to find the information, resources, and support you need to achieve your loftiest goals and create your ideal life. And it’s easier than ever to start your own business and sell to customers all over the globe – or become an entrepreneur and share your passion with the world.

But with the overwhelming amount of information available to us – and the endless number of digital distractions – we have bigger challenges facing us as well.

That’s why The Success Principles matter now more than ever. By following these time-tested principles, you will be able to clearly define your path to success and overcome all the obstacles – digital as well as those in the offline world, including your own head! – that are holding you back from creating the life of your dreams.

Facilitate Change by Empowering Others

teamcroppedThe first Success Principle I teach is to take 100 percent responsibility for your life. Never has this been more needed than now. Current societal challenges have left many American living in a state of resignation and despair.

It is time to turn this situation around. Each of us has the power within us to create the life we want, the life we dream about, the life we were born to live. Each of us deserves to fulfill our full potential and manifest our true destiny. It is our birthright, but it must be claimed. It must be earned through hard work, and part of that work is first learning and then living by the time-tested and ageless principles that are guaranteed to bring about our desired results.

And you, even as a sole individual, can have a tremendous impact.

Pass Along the Lessons

Most of us did not learn the principles of success in school or at church. Only a few of us learned them at home. Instead, the principles of success have been passed down by mentors, teachers, coaches and more recently in books, seminars and audio programs.

As a student of success, you have much wisdom to offer the people in your life. The greatest gift you can give anyone is a gift of empowerment and love. What could be more loving than helping someone you care about get free from their limiting beliefs and ignorance about success, and empowering them to create the life that they truly want from the depths of their soul?

Imagine the Possibilities

What if everyone in your family gave up complaining, took full responsibility for themselves and their lives and started creating the life of their dreams? What if every one in your company practiced these principles? What if every member of your softball team approached life this way? What if every high school student in America knew these principles and put them into practice in class, on the playing field and in their social life? What if every man and woman in prison was to learn these valuable principles before they were released back into society?  It would be a very different world.

Imagine a world where everyone would take 100% responsibility for their lives and the results they produce or don’t produce. Where everybody would be clear about their visions and their goals. Where nobody would fall victim to the criticism and abuse of others.  Where everyone would persevere in the face of hardship and challenge.

Men and women would band together in teams to support each other to become all that they could be. People would ask for what they need and want and feel free to say no the requests of others when it is not right for them to respond with a yes.  People would stop whining and complaining and get on with creating the life that they want.  People would tell the truth and listen to each other with compassion because they know that peace, joy and prosperity would flourish if they did.

In short, the world would work!

Your Contribution Matters

The greatest contribution you can make to the world is to grow in self-awareness, self-realization and the power to manifest your own heartfelt dreams and desires. This is why Mahatma Gandhi advised, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

As you shift, the people around you will notice and be inspired to model your actions. And as they shift, you’ll find that your little world becomes more of the place you dream it to be, full of support, peace and love.

The next greatest thing you can do is to actively facilitate the growth of others. But they are not the only ones who will benefit by your investment of time and energy in taking on the role of teacher.

Passing along your wisdom forces you to clarify your ideas, confront inconsistencies in your own thinking and more closely walk your talk. But most importantly, it requires you to read, study and speak the information over and over again. The resulting repetition reinforces your own learning.

And here’s another major benefit—the more you help other people succeed in life, the more they will want to help you succeed. If you’ve ever wondered why people who teach success strategies are so successful, here’s the answer: Because they have helped so many people get what they want, those they have helped naturally want to return the favor. The same will be true for you.

Help Create a Movement

I envision a world where everyone is inspired to believe in themselves and their abilities and is empowered to reach their full potential and realize all their dreams. I want the Success Principles taught in every school and university, and practiced in every small business and large corporation.

I’d love to have you join me in spreading the word and changing the world. If you feel inspired to share the Success Principles with your clients, students, employees and family, I’ve created a study guide that you can use to lead a free Success Principles study group. Three Ways to Express Appreciation for a Greater Impact

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is the time when most people tend to demonstrate their love and appreciation. But wouldn’t it be nice to experience that level of joy, love and appreciation every day of the year?

The process begins with us.

Someone once gave me a card that said, “The love I give to you is second-hand because I experienced it first.” In other words, for us to love someone else, we first have to feel the love within us.

To develop the ability to maintain a state of love and gratitude on a more regular basis, we need to make it a habit. We do dozens of things every day on automatic pilot, such as eating our meals, taking showers, or doing the dishes. We don’t have to spend time visualizing these activities or putting them on our to-do lists. We simply do them out of habit. Expressing appreciation on a daily basis will help you turn gratitude into a daily habit with multiple benefits.

3 Kinds of Appreciation

For your appreciation to hit the mark, keep in mind that there are three different kinds of appreciation – auditory, visual and kinesthetic. These are the three ways that our brains take in information, and everyone has a dominant type they prefer. Tailor the type of appreciation you give to suit the person you want to honor.

Auditory people like to hear appreciation. Expressing thanks verbally is the best way to let them know how much we appreciate them. Auditory people are very sensitive to the tones of our voices, so speaking in a caring and compassionate voice is highly effective.

Visual people like to receive things they can see. Letters, cards, flowers, plaques, certificates, pictures and any other gifts are perfect for these individuals.

Kinesthetic people need to feel appreciation. My wife is a kinesthetic person. She loves to do things that make her feel good, such as hiking, getting massages or picking out clothes that feel good to the touch. The best way for me to express appreciation to my wife is with a hug, a kiss or simply spending time with her.

 Blend for Impact

When in doubt, use all three types of communication. Tell them, show them and give them a pat on the back. For example, put your arm around your kids when you tell them how much you appreciate them and then follow up later with a card.

Using multiple forms of communication also can strengthen your message. Although I am very visual, I’m also a big fan of physical touch. If you give me a hug, a handshake or a high five, the physical touch multiples the appreciation I feel by a factor of 10!

Keep Score

New habits take 30 to 60 days to lock in. An Appreciation Scorecard is an easy way to build the habit of expressing your gratitude.

When I was working to consciously lock in this new habit, I carried a 3” x 5” card in my pocket all day. Every time I acknowledged and appreciated someone, I would place a check mark on the card.

I set a goal of appreciating 10 people every day. I would not go to bed without achieving my daily quota. I would appreciate my wife and children, write letters to my mother or stepfather, or e-mail my staff. I did this every day for 6 months, until I no longer needed the card as a reminder.

As we build the habit of appreciation, it helps to expand the circle of people whom we appreciate. Our society flourishes because of connections. We literally couldn’t survive without other people. Nobody pumps their own petroleum, turns it into gas, and trucks it into their own town. Other people do it. The food we eat probably has 30 to 40 people involved in it before it gets to our tables. Although they may be strangers, the people who serve us by doing their part in making our society function deserve our thanks, too.

Build Your Appreciation Muscle

To build the habit of appreciation, I encourage you to keep a daily scorecard as I did. Express your appreciation to at least 10 people a day, both individuals you know intimately, as well as virtual strangers who touch your life. Experiment with the different forms of appreciation, and observe how much more deeply your appreciation is received when you find the right way to deliver it for each individual.

Beat the "Shiny Object" Syndrome

Shiny ObjectsVariety is the spice of life. But if you – like me – view the world as an exciting buffet of opportunities to learn, try and create new things, you know that variety can be dangerous.

The problem is that it’s easy to get distracted from the goals and commitments you’ve already made. Rather than seeing things through to completion, you abandon the goals and projects you’ve already started to chase after whatever new thing has just caught your eye.

I call this “shiny object” syndrome, and it has derailed the success of many people who could be very successful – if they only could maintain their focus long enough to complete a goal.

If you frequently abandon commitments in favor of new interests and projects, here are five techniques I’ve found helpful in evaluating new opportunities.

•    Postpone Your Decision.  It’s easy to get swept away with excitement when you stumble across something new and exciting. Try waiting a few days before making a final decision about whether or not to commit to the new opportunity. During this self-imposed cooling-off period, you’ll probably find that your enthusiasm wanes and you’re better able to evaluate whether this new opportunity will move you closer to your goal.

During your waiting period, make a list of all things you could possibly do with your time, including both the new opportunity and your existing commitments. Ask yourself where you would schedule time for the new activity or project. You’ll quickly see that there’s not enough time for everything you want to achieve, and you’ll see exactly what you would have to give up to squeeze the new opportunity into your schedule.

•    Use Review Board.  I’m constantly coming up with new projects that I want to do, as well as fielding exciting joint venture proposals from colleagues. Rather than making the executive decision to take on a new project and then delegating the work to my staff, I now seek my team’s buy-in first. If they say that taking on a potential new project would require sacrificing a more important existing goal, the idea is put on hold.

If you don’t have a staff or co-workers, create your own review board. Ask people you trust and who understand your goals for input before you commit to taking on any new projects or work.

•    Inner Board of Advisors.  Create an imaginary group of mentors that you can turn to for advice. Simply create some quiet time, close your eyes and ask your board for advice about the opportunity you are considering. Your inner board of advisors can include anyone – alive or deceased, famous or not, people you’ve met and people you’ve only read about. Mine includes author and activist Helen Keller, as well as President John F. Kennedy. Although both are deceased, I get very distinct guidance when I ask for their help and open up to their wisdom.

•    Forced Choice Technique.  Write a list of all of the things you want to do. Then prioritize your list using a forced comparison. With this technique, you compare items one at a time, from the top of the list to the bottom. Start by asking which you would rather do – item 1 or item 2. Take the winner and compare it to the next item on the list. Then compare that winner – let’s say it is item 3 – and compare it to item 4. Once you’ve done a forced comparison with all items on the list, you’ll have identified your number-one priority.

Now go back to remaining items on your list, and start the forced comparison process again with the first two items. Repeat the entire process until you have prioritized the entire list of activities. This will help you gauge the importance of the new activity or project you are considering in comparison with everything else you have already committed to.

Finally, ask yourself the following two questions: “What is the most effective use of my time now?” and “What’s the most important thing to do today?” This will help you maintain focus in a sea of choices.

•    Muscle Testing.  Your body never lies. So when in doubt about your enthusiasm for the fun opportunity you just discovered, simply ask your body for its input. The easiest way is to use the standing body lean. With this process, you stand and ask your body to show you a “yes.” After a few seconds, your body will start to lean forward or backward. Then ask your body to show you a “no,” at which point it should lean the opposite direction. Once you’ve calibrated yourself, ask your body whether you should act on the opportunity. The answer you receive in the form of a simple lean will reveal what truly is in your best interest.

Maintaining the focus you need to complete goals can be difficult when the world offers so many exciting things to learn, do and experience. Use these 5 tips to ensure that any new opportunities you choose to pursue will support, rather than detract, from your existing commitments. By resisting the adrenaline rush that comes from starting something new, you’ll find it easier to complete more of what you start – delivering a sense of accomplishment that’s hard to beat.

Use Feedback to Your Advantage

Once you begin to take action on a project or a goal, you’ll start getting feedback about whether you’re doing the right thing.  You’ll get data, advice, help, suggestions, direction - and even criticism - that will help you constantly adjust and move forward, while continually enhancing your knowledge, abilities, attitudes and relationships.

But asking for feedback is really only the first part of the equation.  Once you receive feedback you have to be willing to embrace it and respond to it.

Positive or Negative ... it's ALL good!

There are two kinds of feedback you might encounter, negative and positive. We tend to prefer the positive: results, money, praise, promotion, raise, awards, happiness, inner peace, etc. It feels better. It tells us we are on course and doing the right thing.

We tend not to like negative feedback: lack of results, little or no money, criticism, poor evaluations, complaints, unhappiness, inner conflict, pain, etc.

However, there is as much useful data in negative feedback as there is in positive feedback. It tells us that we are off course, headed in the wrong direction, and doing the wrong thing. This is priceless information!

How Most People Handle the Negative

Three of the most common – and unproductive – responses to negative criticism are:

•    Caving in and quitting. How many times have you or someone you know hit an obstacle and given up the goal because it was too hard or “not meant to be”? This is a poor way to respond to criticism, because all it does it keep you stuck in the same place.

•    Getting mad at the source of the feedback. How many times have you responded with anger, hostility or resentment when someone has given you negative feedback? This serves only to push away the messenger and the feedback, when the message you’re receiving may be exactly what you need to hear to move closer to your goal.

•    Ignoring the feedback. We all know people who tune out everyone’s point of view but their own. The sad thing is that the feedback they are blocking could significantly change their lives, if only they would listen.

If you fall into any of these traps, try to remember that feedback is not criticism. It is simply information – corrective guidance that’s meant to help to get you back on course to achieve your goal. I like to refer to negative feedback as information for “improvement opportunities.”

Not every action will produce the desired result. Not every action will work. Making mistakes, getting it almost right, and experimenting to see what happens are all part of the process of eventually getting it right.

Thomas Edison is reported to have tried over 2,000 different experiments that failed before he finally got the light bulb to work. He once told a reporter that, from his perspective, he had never failed at all. Inventing the light bulb was just a 2,000-step process. If you can adopt that attitude, then you can be free to take an action, notice what result you get, and then adjust your next actions based on the feedback you have received.

The Most Valuable Question You May Ever Learn

In the 1980s, a multimillionaire businessman taught me a question that radically changed the quality of my life. So what is this magical question that can improve the quality of every relationship you are in, every product you produce, every service you deliver, every meeting you conduct, every class you teach and every transaction you enter?

Here it is:

“On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the quality
of our relationship during the last week?”

Here are a number of variations on this question that have served me well over the years...

“On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate:”

              -our service?        -our product?
 -my teaching? -this class/seminar/workshop?
 -this meeting? -our date/vacation?
 -this meal? -my coaching/management?
 -our performance? -my parenting/babysitting?
 -this book? -this recording/show?

Any answer less than a 10 always gets this follow-up question:

“What would it take to make it a 10?”

This is where the really valuable information comes from. Knowing that a person is dissatisfied is not enough. Knowing in detail what will satisfy them gives you the information you need to do whatever it takes to create a winning product, service or relationship.

Ask Yourself for Feedback

In addition to asking others for feedback, ask yourself for feedback, too. Your body is very adept at telling you whether you are on course. When you are relaxed and happy, your body is telling you that you are on track. When you are constantly exhausted, tense, in pain, unhappy and angry, then you are off track.

Take time to listen to what your body is saying to you. Take time to listen to your physical sensations and your feelings. They are sending you important messages.

Remember, feedback is simply information. You don’t have to take it personally; just welcome it and use it.

Activate notifications

Exciting news – a Dragon will be joining us at my private retreat in Italy this July!  That’s right, I said “Dragon.”  I’m talking about Sean Gallagher, one of Ireland’s top entrepreneurs and finalist for the Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Here he is:

Sean is best known as co-founder and former CEO of Ireland’s largest home technology company, Smarthomes.  He was also a popular investor on Dragons’ Den – an International version of the U.S. television show, Shark Tank – and is known as a champion for start-ups and emerging entrepreneurs.

Over the last 20 years, Sean has successfully trained and mentored hundreds of start-ups and emerging entrepreneurs.   And now he’s going to share his brilliant business mind with the 26 participants who attend my private luxury retreat in Italy this July!

I’ve asked Sean to come on board as a facilitator because many of the registered participants have said they want to focus on growing their business during the four-day retreat.  I know that Sean will give them invaluable support that will launch them toward achieving their most ambitious goals.

There are only 4 spots left at the retreat – and I suspect with this announcement those spots are going to fill very quickly. (The retreat IS taking place in gorgeous Tuscany, after all!)  So, If you’d like to seize the chance to work one-on-one with me to achieve more than you ever thought possible – NOW is the time to act.

Two Heads Are Better than One: How to Accelerate Your Success with a Mastermind Group

We all know that two heads are better than one when it comes to solving a problem or creating a result. So imagine having a permanent group of five or six people who meet every week for the purpose of problem solving, brainstorming, networking, and encouraging and motivating each other!

This process is called masterminding and is one of the most effective success tools you can adopt! It is a powerful way to support your dreams and bring unlimited resources to your business and personal life.

Participating in a mastermind group has been critical to me. I can’t imagine achieving all I have without one, and it certainly made my goals happen much faster.

Mastermind group at Private Luxury Retreat in Maui

A Process for Accelerating Your Growth

The basic philosophy of a mastermind group is that more can be achieved in less time when people work together. Sometimes called a “dream team” your mastermind group is made up of two or more individuals who voluntarily come together on a regular basis – weekly, biweekly, or monthly – to share ideas, thoughts, information, feedback and resources.

Your group can be composed of people from your own industry or profession or people from all walks of life. You can focus on business, increasing each other’s income, building a business, raising better kids, or solving a social problem.

Within your mastermind group, you benefit from the other members who empower you and draw out your full talents, resources and abilities. They trigger you, stimulate and motivate you to become all you are capable of being.

Creating Your Dream Team

Regardless of its purpose, the key is to choose people who are already where you’d like to be in your life – or who are at least a level above you. In forming your mastermind group, start by carefully enrolling another friendly, on-purpose, like-minded individual. Start by meeting together and then adding other selected, unanimously agreed-upon individuals who will work in total harmony for the good of each other and for the good of the group.

1. Your Dream Team should consist of 4-8 people. Most people find that 6 is the ideal number.

2. Meet weekly, if possible, for an hour to an hour and a half. This meeting must be held sacred as a life-enhancing priority. The meetings should be upbeat, enriching, encouraging and beneficial to each individual and the group’s purposes. I always start our meetings with a prayer or an invocation. You could also start with an inspiring story.

3. Each member must agree to play all out — to openly share ideas, support, contacts, information, feedback, and anything else that will help advance the individual and group goals.

4. Start by having each member share something positive and good that happened since the last meeting.

5. Next, have each member share an opportunity or problem they have experienced since the last meeting and ask for whatever support they would like on it. Appoint a time-keeper to make sure that everyone gets the same amount of time. This is important if you want your group to last. Everyone must get value at each meeting.

6. End by sharing appreciations and acknowledgements.

You’ll find one of the real values of a mastermind group is the accountability factor – other members checking up on you to make sure you meet your stated commitments. It’s one way to ensure you’ll accomplish a lot more!
